Greenhaw Primary are currently working hard towards becoming a Level 2 Rights Respecting School. The Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. A rights-respecting school not only teaches about children’s rights but also models rights and respect in all its relationships: between teachers / adults and pupils, between adults and between pupils.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the first legally binding international instrument to incorporate the full range of human rights—civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. In 1989, world leaders decided that children needed a special convention just for them because people under 18 years old often need special care and protection that adults do not. The leaders also wanted to make sure that the world recognized that children have human rights too.
Throughout the year we take part in many community events and visit many places locally, including other schools. It is on these visits that our children become ambassadors for the Rights Respecting School Award. In the way that our pupils interact with members of the community and the respect shown, clearly demonstrates that we are a Rights Respecting School.
